Auto Service Manuals

The difference between professional mechanics and shade tree technicians is the Pros know the factory auto service manual is one of the most important tools you can have. I fix ambulances for a living and I couldn’t do it without the vehicle specific service manual. It is the primary source of repair diagrams, vehicle specifications, check engine light code chart and definitions, wiring diagrams and troubleshooting tree charts.

The vehicle manufacturer publishes these auto repair manuals each year for every vehicle they build. They are written for professional technicians. DIY car mechanics will find them just as useful if not more so. The most direct line to a repaired automobile is having the proper information to get you there.  My shop foreman once said to me, a diagnostic ladder diagram can make an idiot look like a genius.

The auto repair video below will show you just how powerful this information can be. The clip will also show you how to find a free demo of the service I like best. Because of the enormous amount of diagnostic and repair information in some of these auto service manuals, manufacturers are forced to print several books.

The Internet with its unlimited storage capacity provides the perfect setting to provide all of this information in one place. Different manufacturers provide these online auto repair depositories.

Each of these major players in the car repairs information business, provide a valuable service.  Each of the three manufacturers will supply online repair manuals that are separated into sections such as suspension and steering. Other hard to live without sections include, emission control, fuel systems and brakes.

What I use most are the ladder diagrams for general car problem diagnosis. They go by symptoms like stalling, vibration, illuminated warning lights of all kinds and of course no start and hesitation. Also valuable would be body systems like ABS and airbags. Finding what you need fast becomes the most important function of a web-based auto service manual. Having used most of the major ones I feel that there is a clear winner.

Free Repair Manual Demo

The demonstration vehicles are available on the site and the sample vehicles are changed from time to time. Also note that the web-based program has recently been updated with a more comfortable look and feel.  The ability to print repair diagrams and diagnostic tree charts is disabled in the demo. The search feature I described in the video has now been moved to the top of the page, which is even more convenient.  If you would like to find out more about the car mechanic that built this page take a look at the homepage for online auto repair.
