How automotive diagnosis reveals car problems. The first step for diagnosis often uncovers the failure. This procedure can save diy car mechanics time. A good example of this is provided in the auto repair video below.

Automotive diagnosis is commonly used to define the primary function of a car mechanic or automotive technician. The word diagnosis is exactly the opposite of educated guessing. When a professional car mechanic performs a diagnostic procedure. He was trained to follow a series of interrelated steps in order to find a solution to a specific car problem.

Automobile diagnostics is a way of looking at the various automotive systems that are not functioning properly. It is very difficult to uncover car problems with out first understanding the purpose and operation of the system that the failure is contained within.

Repair diagrams in service manuals are diagnostic aids given for many different systems and problems that could be found within that system. The most popular of these repair diagrams are system based diagnostic charts. These flowcharts are sometimes called decision trees. They guide you through a step-by-step process in a detailed manner.

As you answer the car questions given at each step you are told what your next step should be depending on the answer to that question. These system based diagnostic charts offer a list of possible causes for each car problem.

Most automotive mechanics will perform a good visual inspection of the affected systems before they break out these diagnostic repair diagrams. Often this first step will uncover damage that is causing the complaint with the vehicle. A quick example of this is a wiring harness chewed through by a mouse. In my 25-year automotive technician career I have seen this hundreds of times.

Animals and rodents seem to love the taste of wiring insulation and also find the warm engine compartment an inviting area to explore. These unwelcome guests unfortunately can do a lot of damage in a short period of time. Performing a quick visual inspection may reveal signs of an unwanted engine compartment pet.
