Accident Related Deaths

According to statistics, there were 36,096 fatalities as a result of car accidents in 2019. While this may seem very high, it is actually a reduction. The previous year shows that 2% more car accidents occurred.

In fact, this is a continuation of a positive trend. Despite an increase in the miles being traveled on American roads, the number of accidents is generally falling each year.

Reasons for Loss of Life

Over 3700 people lose their lives because of car accidents each day in the USA. But what are the reasons for this? What aspect of car safety are people actually neglecting?

The highest reason for the loss of life in car accidents is still drinking and driving. Over 10,000 people suffer injuries because of this every year. In addition to this, distracted driving is the next cause of injury. This includes looking at mobile phones or eating and drinking while behind the wheel.

Driving while sleep-deprived or drowsy is another major cause of accidents. Almost 800 people lost their lives for this reason in one recent year.

Car Crash Trends

Car accident trends are constantly changing. Between 1913 and 209 experts estimate that there was an 831% increase in car accidents! However, that does not mean that there is an increase each year.

For example, in 2011 there were only 29,867 crashes in the USA, this is the lowest figure in the last 20 years.

As we are constantly hearing about accidents, they can become a part of our everyday life. However, using statistics such as these give us a reason for optimism about the safety of driving on the road.

Accidents By State

While we hear large overall statistics for the USA, it is interesting to drill down to the state level to find out where the accidents are actually happening.

Take Alaska for example. Since there is a low population there crashes are rarer. In fact, in 2018 they only have 81 crashes during the year. In contrast, Alabama has a much higher population and endured almost 1000 crashes that year.
